TECH TIP: SHIM INSTALLATION
S&W Hammer and Trigger Shim Installation Instructions
To install shims in your S&W Revolver, you should disassemble and remove the Hammer and Trigger springs,
begin by installing a shim on each side of the Trigger and Hammer, re-install the frame side plate (without springs) and check for binding. If the Trigger and Hammer move freely, continue to add shims.
At the point you begin to trap or bind the hammer and trigger, you will have your approximate free clearance, and you can then remove shims and install the proper amount, leaving a final clearance of around .003" to .004" - and reassemble the unit complete.
I suggest a 12 Piece Kit to provide ample Shims for this procedure.

Yoke Shims can be stacked to obtain proper clearance.
These Shims are installed between the Yoke and Frame.
Yoke Bearings are necessary when setting up the Yoke and Cylinder for Minimum Endshake, especially on S&W Models (1988 Series & Later) that have the Spring Loaded Plunger in the Front Side Plate Screw.

Burrs from the stamping process can influance the measurements slightly, it is best to refer to the color coding when deciding what shim to use.

Barrel to Cylinder Contact and/or Rubbing, and give better Hammer Strikes,
and can cure light strikes if caused by Excessive Endshake
Excessive Endshake is a more harmful than a slightly wide barrel gap.

Smith & Wesson Models K, L and N Shooter's Pak
The Power Rib Mainspring developed by W.C. Wolff Company is a patented mainspring for use in Smith & Wesson K, L and N frame revolvers. This spring has a unique variable power rib-back design. The Wolff Power Rib Mainspring dramatically improves the smoothness and consistency of trigger pull essentially eliminating stack up as well as providing optimum hammer action. This spring can usually take the place of expensive trigger jobs, with better results. NOTE: For most target and non-critical applications, Wolff recommends the TYPE-2 spring which is reduced power.

For critical applications such as law enforcement, Wolff strongly recommends the TYPE-1 spring which is factory equivalent in strength.
